The 2nd week of Advent : Sunday 5 December

Bible reading for Advent

"Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.
Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill made low.
The crooked roads shall become straight, the rough ways smooth.
And all people will see God’s salvation.”

Luke 3 v4-6

Prayer 2

Action for Advent

  1. Reflect on how you might better contribute to preparing the way of the Lord, especially for those hidden in the suffering of modern slavery.
  2. Identify groups and organisations already working in your community that you might be able to support.
  3. Find out about the debates concerning slavery and public policy – especially around the National Referral Mechanism and immigration.
  4. Write to your MP, highlighting the issues surrounding modern slavery victims.

Advent fact

In 2020, the National Referral Mechanism received 10,613 referrals from potential victims but this is believed to be just the tip of the iceberg. Many victims never come forward to the authorities and continue to live miserable lives with no freedom or dignity.
