Hidden Voices Bridgwater is once again rejoicing in how its recent Art Exhibition enabled many local people to find out more about modern slavery.

From 18-23rd October, Taunton Minster hosted a stunning art exhibition on the theme of modern slavery. Artists from Somerset and London contributed to the thought-provoking show with a staggering array of artwork.

Throughout the weekend, there was a steady flow of visitors to the Minster and the artwork prompted much discussion. Representatives from local modern slavery organisations including Hidden Voices Bridgwater were on hand to answer questions and signpost support.

According to Sian Owen, co-ordinator of Hidden Voices Bridgwater, there were a number of significant conversations over the course of the weekend. She explains: “We spoke to many different people, some who knew nothing about modern slavery and others who had concerns about specific situations. We were able to point two people in the direction of the Modern Slavery Helpline and encourage them to seek formal support. We also met people who pledged to support the cause, both financially and with skills and time. The Bishop and clergy spoke about modern slavery at the three church services and after each service, many worshippers flocked to the art exhibition to find out more, pick up information and ask questions.

“We are very thankful to the Diocese of Bath & Wells, Taunton Minster and the Lord-Lieutenant of Somerset for their whole-hearted support throughout the weekend. The Diocese of Bath & Wells also made it possible for us to buy advertising space on a large illuminated sign on the A38, one of Somerset’s main roads. This public display captured the attention of passers-by, bringing the issue of modern slavery into the spotlight and encouraging people to take action.”
