Protecting children from modern slavery

A new safeguarding resource for worshipping communities around the world

A team from The Clewer Initiative in the UK visited the Diocese of Western Tanganyika (DWT) in Tanzania in Summer 2023. The purpose of the trip was to develop a Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking (MSHT) Safeguarding resource for use internationally.

Representatives from the Diocesan team in the DWT were interviewed and the findings from 11 child welfare seminars analysed. The seminars took place at Anglican churches over a 2-week period. The attendees were a range of people from the church community and local government leaders. There were 1,068 attendees across 11 seminars.

The resulting material is designed to be used by senior leaders to help them establish good child welfare practices and enable them to recognise and respond to concerns and reduce risks relating to MSHT in their communities.

The content can be followed and contextualised to individual communities.
