World Youth Day is a global gathering for young people, organised by the Catholic Church. It occurs every few years.

This year, World Youth Day took place in Lisbon, with around 1.5 million young people attending.

Since the International Day of Prayer and Awareness Against Human Trafficking in February, Amy, the Business Support Officer for The Clewer Initiative, has been part of a group of young people working with Talitha Kum to raise awareness of human trafficking. Amy was able to go to World Youth Day in Lisbon to help with the Talitha Kum stand.

Amy explains: "World Youth Day provided an amazing opportunity to speak to young people from around the world about human trafficking. We asked young people to contribute to a hand print mural which was a powerful way of signifying that human trafficking must stop.

“It was really encouraging that many of the individuals we spoke to were already aware of human trafficking and were keen to do something about it and raise awareness with their friends and families.”

Amy was also able to attend some of the main events including the opening ceremony and commissioning mass with Pope Francis.

She concludes: “We are looking forward to continuing to work with Talitha Kum in the future and encouraging more young people to take action against human trafficking.”
